What war on terror?

With all of the media and US Government attention focused on Iraq, Iran and Syria, who is following through with the so-called "War on Terror"? How has Iraq become labeled as part of the 'War on terror'? Who's targeting the new al-Qaeda cells that are forming? Does the US Government truly understand the causes of terrorism?

Mike Schueder, a former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit has sharply criticized the US Government for its lack of understanding on the causes of terrorism. Mr. Scheuder resigned this month from his CIA post. "Bin Laden is attacking us because a specific set of US policies that have been in gear for 30 years and haven't been reviewed, haven't been debated, haven't been questioned," says Mr Scheuer, who has written two books anonymously criticizing government policies. He cited the apparently unquestioning US support for Israel; America's presence on the Arabian Peninsula; and support for regimes perceived as oppressing Muslims and for Muslim "tyrannies".

Mr. Schueder seems to understand some of the reasons for resentment toward the US Government and the causes of terrorism. I think this is something that can’t be viewed using a traditional narrow-minded perspective of using war to solve every issue. A lot of lessons have been learned about war over the last century and I think the world should be civilized enough to realize that war isn’t the answer. You have to look at these issues with a different perspective and an open mind; and until we convince our American friends to speak up loudly enough to oppose their government’s policies, we will be getting ourselves into a bigger mess and more innocent lives will be lost.

This Mr Schueder seems to have a clue, but unfortunately, ever since Bush became Emperor of the USA, advisors that have something intelligent and cluey to contribute are systematically dismissed and *convinced* to resign.

My uneducated guess is that the current US regime, which thanks to Bush having a direct phone line to the heavens, will blissfully ignore what 6 billion ppl on this planet are pissed about, and will pursue his diligent war on the Axis of Evil.

Then, he'll wonder why Americans can't walk without getting murdered anywhere on this planet except within US and Western Europe borders.

And he'll proudly announce the reason for it is because the rest of the world is so jaleous and hateful of America's freedom, they can't wait to kill Americans for it.

LOL, what an ignorant ass.

A great post indeed. I agree with both of you Jim & WhyNot! I really wonder how long and how much more losses it'll take Bush to realize that war will only make things worse!! In the war on Iraq alone, all involved people have lost on the financial and civil levels!
As WhyNot said, it's this stupid ignorant policy and this thirst for war that creates a negative reaction to the U.S. government and people. But seems like he gives no damn as long as he's enjoying his game! Human lives, and human dignity mean nothing but tools for pleasure to him! what a shame!

Well, we have a very deep problem here. Getting the US to look at and stop one of the causes of terrorist activity i.e. poverty and injustice will be hard won. What does the capitalist system thrive on? Making oneself rich is the name of the game isn't it? I have only recently realized why people become anarchist. They have reached a place where they feel talk is useless. Isn't this also why many young men and women strap bombs to themselves? Yes, some are religious zealots and Bush and many far-right zealots would have you think they all are but this is not the case as many humanrights advocates have been telling us for decades.

That's very true. These people have been starved and driven from their homes and they have lost all hope except to get revenge, so they resort to suicide bombs.

I hate to admit this, but I sometimes listen to Rush Limbaugh. He clearly stated the position of many ultra-conservatives and I believe Bush when he said that he really didn't care why "they" hate "us."

If one believes that he is right, then why would he want to reconsider anything? Unfortunately, that's Bush's position. Screw the Germans. Screw the French and screw anybody else that disagrees with him.
Scary huh?

there is no war on terror. there is a war on iraq. to see where bush's priorities are, you need look no further than the bounty on the head of hussien's sons v. the bounty on the head of osoma bin laden. why are the heads of two men who had done nothing to this country worth more than that of the head of a man who took our planes, flew them into our buildings, and killed 2300 of our citizens?

when is the last time you heard anything about bin laden on any of the news channels (liberal or conservative) or from the bush admin themselves. i can't wait to see the iran/syria thing plays out.

It's very unfortunate. His attitude is that it's his way or the highway. You either agree with everything he does, or you're an enemy. Where is the diplomacy in this? What ever happened to constructive debates? It's also very true that when someone at the White House disagrees with a decision, they are fired or resign. This is truly a Cowboy mentality. But I guess if Bush didn't have that mentality, he wouldn't have been able to viciously pry his way into office.

Longshot, when Limbaugh was first getting started I listened to him also. I know good people back home who have no world view and by this I mean they couldn't show you France on a map and all they know about it is what they heard during the past year on the television. They are religious to a fault meaning they are in the church 3 times a week. They swear by Limbaugh and Fox news. All you have to do to validate yourself to them is mention God and wave the flag. During the election I did all I could to point them to facts that were well represented on the internet. They decided they would leave the thinking to Bush and those they felt knew about such things better than they did. I stopped trying. They are a lost cause. They refuse to use their minds and will pay for it eventually. We will all pay for it.
